In the care home provided by Leonard Cheshire Disability in Alne Hall, near York, there are 28 permanent residents aged between 35 and 72, one room is used for respite care. There is also a day care service Monday – Friday for five people from the local community. Most residents use wheelchairs for mobility, they may have been born with a disability such as cerebral palsy or have developed a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis or been involved in an accident. The purpose of the volunteers is to to provide our residents with independence and choice in the activities, both at Alne Hall and in the community. Tasks for the international volunteers will include mostly: • assisting residents with activities both inside and outside the home, such as with crafts, music, IT and social activities. • helping at meal times and with clearing up afterwards Participants will volunteer a maximum of 35 hours per week. A workday may not necessarily be during the daytime as some activities will take place in the early morning or evening. Also, day excursions may require the Participant to work longer hours than usually, but the maximum working hours can never exceed 35 hours per week.

Volunteers will have their own room with double or twin bed. Bathroom is shared by 2 volunteers, laundry facilities in the main building. Fridge and drink making facilities in volunteer’s lounge. Activities kitchen available in the evenings and weekends. Food is provided 3 meals a day by Leonard Cheshire.

Alne,York. Alne is serviced by a bus service during the day giving access to York and local villages and there is a doctor’s surgery in the next door village however prospective volunteers need to be aware that Alne is a small village with no shop or entertainment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This placement would suit a volunteer who enjoys caring for people, being creative, sensitive and enjoys life. A reasonable level of English is required so that the volunteer is able to communicate with staff and residents. A volunteer is needed who possibly would like to take a career in care, possibly a student of social studies. Leonard Cheshire Disability provides all of the support and training. TRAINING: Volunteers will receive a comprehensive training and induction programme. On arrival volunteers are given an Induction welcome pack, which outlines working hours, the name and contact details of the staff who are responsible for the volunteer and a brief outline of each resident. HOLIDAY: The volunteer is entitled to 2 days off per week. Days off are not necessarily in a row or at the weekend as this is a time when the service users particularly like to go out and access community activities. However, the Participant is entitled to at least 1 weekend off per month. In addition to their days off, Participants are entitled to 8 bank holidays per year, plus 2 days leave per calendar month volunteering. EXTRA FEE: £40 (GBP) - a small contribution to Concordia’s administration fees. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Volunteers are refunded all travel expenses to and from the project – also financial support is provided to get insurance cover and for VISA. All these costs can be refunded to the volunteer up to a total maximum of £1820 and will be given back in monthly instalments during the project.
