Description

Community Health Volunteers (CHV) was started with the aim of creating awareness on HIV/AIDS among the residents of Vihrembe area, as well as on issues of sexual and reproductive health. CHV is also actively involved in jigger eradication and awareness campaigns in the community. In addition, CHV educates the local community about the conservation of Kakamega Rainforest and its fragile ecosystem. The forest is home to many unique and rare animal and plant species but the increasing human population has exerted negative pressures to the forest, e.g. illegal logging, charcoal burning, cattle grazing, harvesting of medical plants and general clearing of the forest for agriculture. CHV involves the community in its preservation, ensuring the forest is cherished as a healthy, unique and diverse ecosystem for future generations. The idea of this project is to create awareness about the negative effects of jiggers on the health of local people.

The Centre For International Voluntary Service (CIVS Kenya) is a community development agency operating especially in the marginalized and poverty-stricken rural areas of Kenya. It pursues an integrated socio-economic and cultural development approach in the fight against poverty and social exclusion of Kenyan communities under the maxim “development by people”. CIVS believes that people should retain the responsibility for their own development while they support, guide and mentor their efforts with innovative and customized high quality services. CIVS achieves these aims through its two program areas: International Voluntary Service and Community Development.
