Bas (Best Affordable Services) Educational Centre is a project that was established in 2014 as a charity organization in Spring Valley, Matopeni, slums. It focuses on children from extremely poor backgrounds. The founder’s motivation was drawn by former schools within the community sending away vulnerable children from school due to lack of school fees. He thought on how he could better the lives of the bright poor children whom some resorted to begging in the streets and the females resorted to child prostitution. After the close of schools in term three in 2013, he founded a centre to provide education, economic empowerment and HIV and AIDS education including psychosocial support to the orphans and vulnerable children. The Centre’s core projects are education, orphan support, protection, economic empowerment for older orphans and caregivers, volunteering, internships, educational trips, sports, HIV &AIDS education and gender based violence. The school hosts nearly 200 children from extremely poor backgrounds, aged between 3 and 12 years. The children attend classes from kindergarten to class 7. The school has seven teachers and eight classes. They also engage in agriculture practice so as to help in feeding program for the students in the school. The organization has also a registered self-help group that deal in table banking which assists the project staff and the community members.
