The South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association (SAVWA) will contribute towards the development of South African communities both urban and rural through local, national, regional and international volunteers to work together towards the cultural, economic, socio-political well-being of young people and marginalised persons or groups through empowerment work camps programs and promotion of sustainable development. The South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association shall work and collaborate with other Volunteer driven organisation, Regional Work Camp Associations, and organisations. South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association is a member of Southern African Workcamp Cooperation (SAWC), Partner with Service Civil International (SCI), Full member of Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVS) and Partner Member of Alliance if European Voluntary Service Organisations.

Book your tickets to OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa Take the Gautrain from OR Tambo International Airport located upstairs of the Arrival Lounge to Pretoria station. Purchase a train card once you exit the airport to follow online on www.gautrain.co.za This is a world class train safe and reliable. You will change train at Marlboro station take train going towards Pretoria station on Platform A. Once a Pretoria station just wait for SAVWA official to pick you up. Please reserve a small amount of money for transport to the camp and vice-verse. We advise all volunteers to ask for advice from us when they are planning to book their ticket to Pretoria and let us know of their date of arrival and departure.

Informations supplémentaires

The work camp participation fee is strictly Euro 260 and this covers simple accommodation, food and project expenses office running/administrative expenses, certificate of participation during the camp, communication prior to, during and after the camp. Please note that this does not include travel expenses to and from the camp, pick up from airport so participants are asked to reserve a small amount of money for transport to the camp and vice-verse. We advise all volunteers to ask for advice from us when they are planning to book their ticket to South Africa.

Love Working with Children? Join Us in 2025! Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children? This coming year, join us in Soshanguve, Pretoria, and be part of an exciting initiative to establish an after-school program for local kids. As a volunteer, you’ll help organize engaging and impactful non-formal activities such as English lessons, arts and crafts, theater, sports, and more. Additionally, you’ll play a key role in developing our Youth Center, a space where we’ll create inspiring lessons, thought-provoking articles, and captivating videos on topics like volunteering, cultural diversity, and other relevant themes. We’re seeking enthusiastic individuals with fresh ideas and creativity to help design the curriculum and plan exciting activities. By collaborating with other volunteers, you’ll create meaningful experiences that leave a lasting impact on the lives of local youth. Volunteer Tasks Volunteers, along with community members, will support and guide both local and international participants through various community development activities. These efforts will address the challenges local communities face daily, spanning social, economic, community, family, and religious contexts. Activities Include: Creating awareness campaigns with other volunteers Administrative work, including drafting reports Resource mobilization and fundraising initiatives Community outreach in neighboring communities From hands-on activities to behind-the-scenes support, your contribution will be invaluable in fostering growth and empowerment within the community. Accommodation Volunteers will share accommodation with fellow participants, fostering a sense of community and connection. The housing is conveniently located near public transportation, shops, and various entertainment facilities, ensuring easy access to essential amenities and leisure activities. The space is fully equipped with modern comforts, including cozy bunk beds with fresh linens, essential toiletries, cutlery, and furniture to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. What to Bring • Sleeping Essentials: A sleeping bag for added comfort. • Personal Care: Sun cream and mosquito spray/lotion. • Footwear: Comfortable sandals and sturdy shoes for different activities. • Clothing: Light, practical clothing for working hours and warm clothes for chilly nights, along with a raincoat for unexpected weather. • Tools and Extras: A torch or flashlight, and if possible, arts and cultural items like drums or other musical instruments to engage children. You may also bring sports equipment such as soccer balls or board games to enrich the activities Food: You will have an unique opportunity to enjoy a rich culinary experience that reflects the country's diverse cultures and traditions. From the savory flavors of a classic braai (South African barbecue) to the sweet delights of milk tart, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Staples like pap (a maize porridge) served with hearty stews and bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry) showcase the fusion of flavors that make South African cuisine so special. Volunteers might also savor biltong (a dried, cured meat snack) and enjoy local treats such as koeksisters, a syrupy, braided doughnut. For the adventurous, trying bobotie, a spiced minced meat dish baked with an egg-based topping, or tasting samp and beans (a traditional dish of crushed corn and beans) will offer a deeper appreciation of South Africa’s food heritage. Sharing meals is an integral part of building community, and volunteers can look forward to lively mealtimes that bring people together in the true spirit of Ubuntu

Weekends are a time for adventure and discovery! Volunteers are encouraged to plan free tours together, exploring local attractions and immersing themselves in the vibrant South African culture. These self-organized outings foster teamwork and offer a chance to create unforgettable memories with fellow participants. Evenings in our work camps are reserved for Cultural Nights, a highlight of the program. Each volunteer gets the opportunity to showcase their country’s culture, traditions, and cuisine. Whether it's sharing a traditional dish, performing a dance, or telling stories about your homeland, these nights are a wonderful way to celebrate diversity and learn from one another. Requirements We welcome participants from all walks of life! To make the most of your experience, here’s what we’re looking for: Open-mindedness: Be ready to embrace new ideas and engage with people from different cultural backgrounds. Positive Attitude: Bring energy and enthusiasm to every task. Willingness to Share: Share your own experiences, skills, and culture with the group. Adaptability: Be flexible to live in simple conditions and try local food with an open heart. Curiosity and Enthusiasm: No prior experience is needed! A passion for learning and contributing is all that matters. Guidance Skills: Show interest in supporting students, especially in cultural and arts-related activities. Excursions and Exploration Some weekends may include guided excursions with students to explore the beautiful areas around Pretoria. These outings provide a chance to connect with the community, bond with students, and experience South Africa’s rich history and natural beauty firsthand. Volunteering with SAVWA is about more than just work it’s about creating meaningful connections, sharing cultures, and embracing the adventure of a lifetime!
