Gamisaraniya is a vibrant collective of rural women dedicated to enhancing economic opportunities and advocating for fundamental rights within their communities. Established as an NGO in 2007, Gamisaraniya empowers rural women through income-generating initiatives, awareness programs, and human rights education. The organization stands as a model of women s leadership, with all aspects of administration and decision-making managed exclusively by women. It continues to be a catalyst for positive change, fostering resilience, independence, and solidarity among rural women.

On the first day, April 2 (Wed), 2025 we will meet at 9:00 AM at the Central Government Bus Station in Colombo, where all volunteers will travel together to the site. From Colombo, the project site is a 7-hour bus journey, with two transfersGet ready for a meaningful adventure

Travail

The project consists of two key components. First, we support families engaged in self-employment by enhancing their income-generating activities, which include home gardening, family workshops, and nurseries.In the second component, we visit villages to engage with the community, including self-help groups, youth, and local institutions like temples and kindergartens. This provides volunteers with the chance to share their lives, cultures, and experiences with the locals while fostering meaningful connections within the community

Logement & nourriture

Stay in a village house with a welcoming host family, conveniently located near the village main road. Our host mother prepares delicious meals for us. The house has electricity, and filtered drinking water is provided. Mobile phones work well, and 3G/4G data connections are available, but there is no internet or Wi-Fi. You can use toilet paper here, and laundry is done by hand, with clothes hung outside to dry.

Higurakgoda. 256km from Colombo, a suburb of Polonnaruwa, the second ancient kingdom in Sri Lanka and declared a world heritage site. Many people depend on paddy farming and it is a low population density area for Sri Lanka (122 people/ km2). The project location is located in Polonnaruwa District, the second kingdom in ancient Sri Lanka. There are lots of archeological sites to visit.
