The work camp is in collaboration with WWF Crotone, which runs C.E.L.A. (legal and environmental education centre).
CELA is a building confiscated from the local mafia (N'drangheta) and has now become the symbol of the fight against organised crime in the province of Crotone. The WWF of Crotone runs a rescue centre for sea turtles in the Caporizzuto Marine Reserve and an aquarium,
Brief history: the C.E.A.M. (Marine Education Centre) was run by a famous religious association called Misericordia. The leader of this association, who was also the priest of the island town of Caporizzuto, was imprisoned four years ago because he was accused of being the boss of the local Mafia organisation. The province of Crotone decided to give CEAM to WWF Crotone for free, but the lack of money forced the association to open only the sea turtle rescue centre, while the aquarium remained closed. Fortunately in 2018 WWF Crotone was able to open the aquarium, but they need the help of many volunteers to clean the tanks.
Although the project takes place in an interesting location, the work camp is not a tourist trip. If you would like to visit cities and tourist destinations in the area, we invite you to do it before or after the camp.
The main activity of the camp is related to the aquarium, where volunteers will manage and clean the aquarium "Capo Rizzuto", as well as restore the fence of the facility.
They will also, if necessary, help the vet and local volunteers to take care of the sea turtles.
During the stay there will be lessons on the history of N'drangheta (name of the local mafia).
You will be sharing this experience with people from other countries. In this work camp the priority of the free time is to share informal moments of intercultural exchange thanks to activities but also by debates.
