Veraldarvinir, Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organisation promoting nature and peace oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. We also send local volunteers intending to have similar experiences abroad. WF aims at promoting active participation of people and its mobility, intercultural learning and voluntary service, through non-formal educational activities. The main activities offered are workcamps, seminars, local events and exchange programmes suitable both for young people and adults. WF is a non-profit organisation with international scope.

The Workcamp leaders will work under the supervision of the project manager of the organization. They will be involved in preparing, organizing, running and evaluating educational and environmental projects in different parts of Iceland. Those projects are organized with international volunteers for six weeks program. In each group there are one or two leaders from the organization.
At the beginning of the stay they will receive qualified training from the organisation members. This training will capacitate her/him to perform the projects´ activities. At the same time he/she will receive guidance in how to plan, organize and lead the projects, including topics as group management, conflict resolution, bookkeeping, development, leader roles, intercultural cooperation, motivation, etc. She/he will also receive practical information about planning a project, spare time activities, first aid, etc.

In the year 2021 the 17 sustainable goals of the United Nations will be our main theme throughout our different programs. During the camp the volunteers will have several workshops and group discussions about the UN goals Volunteers will do clean the coastline in different parts of the island and help recycling the plastic which we are collecting there. Working hours with practical work are 4 - 5 hours per day five days a week + 3 hours a day education

Most of the mornings during the program we will have workshops for two hours about the sustainable goals with a special focus on climate changes. The issue of global warming is well known all over the world. The humanity must act in a more environmentally friendly way. The main goal of this project is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects’ participants. Within the project we will learn about green energy, sustainable householding, waste treatment, nutrition, the effects of consumption and lots more. If you want to change something, develop solutions, or inspire others, you must understand the issues and tasks first. In addition to the theoretical part, we are going to practice sustainable work. The clean up the coastline is the main task but we will also plant several trees during the camp. Planting trees becomes a very useful action against climate change because trees absorb carbon dioxide, clean the air and prevent erosions.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, but hopefully, the weather will be nice most of the time. This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.We will also focus on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, teenagers from different countries will present their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you!

Activities: Our primary activity is organizing environmental-and educational related projects where people coming from different countries perform voluntary work. In organizing them, much emphasis has been put on making sure the volunteers see that their work is important, they help a community in need, or they work for the protection of the environment. In the meantime, they themselves form a community and get in close contact with locals as well as with other participants of the project from different cultures and nationalities. They find out about each other's habits and ways of life, also getting an insight to the problems of the area and its inhabitants

Logement & nourriture vegetarian

During the workcamps the leaders will share a dormitory with several other volunteers in a house offering basic facilities. Beds are provided, however volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags.
Food is provided, however everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! There is internet connection available in all houses.
