The Nghia Tan primary school is situated in Cau Giay district of central Hanoi; just opposite Nghia Do Lake. The local area has many cafés and charming shops. You can have relaxing walks with fresh ice-cream on warm days.
The school has over two thousand students ranging in age from 6-11 and is a lively and active environment for any volunteer looking to teach. The children do have some knowledge of both English and French, but, as is often the case for Vietnamese students, they have poor pronunciation due to their lack of contact with native speakers even though the school has been received a lot of supports from the government to improve their infrastructure
Volunteers should :
-Love working with students.
-Mature and proactive
The minimum duration is 2 weeks and the amount of the participation fee is 400€ for 2 weeks. Each additional week is 100€ more.
The main task of those volunteering at Nghia Tan is French assistance; however, expect to play a role as a teacher when needed. Vietnamese teachers need help of volunteers in terms of speaking and listening skills. They can speak reasonably good French, but, lack the pronunciation skills of a native speaker, which is where volunteers are of great assistance. Volunteers have to follow the syllabus stipulated by the governmental program, but can also give helpful feedback and ideas regarding the syllabus.
Volunteers can often introduce fun new learning games which are thoroughly enjoyed by the kids. One French class has about 30 students. However, volunteers should not feel daunted as the staff are always both very friendly and very helpful and will always offer support if neccessary.
Though the children at Nghia Tan School are bynow quite used to foreign visitors, they still thoroughly enjoy having the volunteers around. Due to their warm reception, volunteers generally become equally fond of the children and enjoy the program very much.
The class duration is 35 minutes and there is a break between classes varying from five to 15 minutes. The volunteer participates in different classes per day, working from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday are off.
Volunteers will stay in a shared house/apartment for the volunteers. They will share their meals and the food will be provided by the hosting organisation.
Volunteers can take bus number 13 or walk to school. The volunteers will need to pay the local transportation by themselves.
Volunteers are free on week-ends wan they can travel and explore Vietnam alone or together with the other volunteers.
