The sea turtle conservation program is a scientific-based conservation activity in which the organizations involved try to increase the amount of sea turtle hatchings in order to give higher survival rates.
The camps are located within walking distances from the beach. Apart from the sea turtles, you will also have high chances of seeing tropical birds, iguanas and monkeys. The main goal of these projects is to help the recovery of sea turtle populations. The species of sea turtles that you can find on these beaches are: Green turtle, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Loggerhead, Black turtle depending in which season you visit.
The cost of the volunteer project : 175 USD per week. (700 USD p/month)
Each project has a different cost, which includes lodging and 3 meals a day. Note that the program does not include daily local transportation.
The cost of the administrative ACI Fee will depend of the number of weeks of your project :
1 - 4 weeks : 165 USD
5-8 weeks : 265 USD
9 - 12 weeks : 365 USD
12 - 16 weeks : 465 USD
16 - 20 weeks : 565 USD
The in Person Orientation Meeting is compulsory for all ecological and social short-term international volunteers, this meeting will always be offered at the beginning of the program, before volunteers start their projects.
If needed, ACI Costa Rica will help you to organize your accommodation in the local hostel before the beginning of the project. Arrangements for lodging once you arrive: hostel 2 nights: $ US 29 Food for 2 days $ US 40 (because hostel only has breakfast).
40 or 48 hours per week, 6 or 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. Sundays off.
The high season is from May to December in this project. You can come the rest of the months since there is work in the project. Activities like reforestation, cleaning the beach and community work are done all the year. There is always something to do.
On Sundays (your day off) you can explore Tortuguero. The village is situated on a sandbar island, separated from the mainland by Tortuguero River and bordering the Caribbean Sea. Tortuguero is renowned for its navigable canals that run through the rainforest in the national park, and has such earned the nickname of 'Central America's Amazon'.
