Description

ACOTPRO is an organization founded by the people of Progreso, this community struggles to protect the turtles that arrived to the region of Bahia Drake, Progreso Beach, Ganadito, and Ganado Beach. The community Progreso is located 1 km east from the Bahia Drake Airport.

Besides that this organization tries to educate the community about the importance to preserve their natural resources. The ACOTPRO association is integrated by around 30 members of the community of the village.

- Wildlife conservation: protecting the turtles!

- Forest conservation: implement reforestation programs in the community

- Educational program: establish an environmental program for the children of the village and support them learning English or other languages

ACI is a non-profit organization founded in 1967, whose main goal is to promote programs of intercultural learning and international volunteer service (IVS) for people from all around of the world, facilitating their experience in social and ecological projects, developing global citizens. ACI wants to contribute to solidarity and friendship between the different societies of our globalized world, to sustainable human development, and personal growth of our participants.

Informations supplémentaires

Willing to do hard physical work, under extreme conditions (heat, rain, work overnight). You must be a good swimmer too and have a health certificate.
Living in simple conditions in very rural areas
Has to be an organized, structured person. (Very important).
Interest in environmental issues.
The volunteer should enjoy working with people and foster good human relations.
Volunteer must be ready to work independently even when the coordinator is not present.
Leadership Skills.
Basic level of Spanish or English
Any other skills biological knowledge, carpentary, electrical skills, computer skills etc

Remarques

Every volunteer will receive a training of two days related to the tasks and information about turtles and the surroundings.
Volunteers are not allowed to use any type of drugs or alcohol during the time they are volunteering.

The cost of your volunteer project(s) + Spanish Classes (if needed) + the administrative ACI Fee depending on the total amount of weeks that you would like to participate.

The cost of the volunteer project : 175 USD per week. (700 USD p/month)

Each project has a different cost, which includes lodging and 3 meals a day. Note that the program does not include daily local transportation.

The cost of the administrative ACI Fee will depend of the number of weeks of your project :

1 - 4 weeks : 165 USD

5-8 weeks : 265 USD

9 - 12 weeks : 365 USD

12 - 16 weeks : 465 USD

16 - 20 weeks : 565 USD

The in Person Orientation Meeting is compulsory for all ecological and social short-term international volunteers, this meeting will always be offered at the beginning of the program, before volunteers start their projects.

If needed, ACI Costa Rica will help you to organize your accommodation in the local hostel before the beginning of the project. Arrangements for lodging once you arrive: hostel 2 nights: $ US 29 Food for 2 days $ US 40 (because hostel only has breakfast).

Travail

Schedule :

From Monday until Friday

The schedule is flexible. (depending on tasks and weather)

Night patrols at the beach. This includes spotting turtles, recollecting the eggs, measuring the turtle and laying the eggs in the safe location, it is important to know that the volunteer will be never alone.
Besides that the volunteer will have to tend the hatchery, they have to watch the nest to find out when the eggs ecosionate, but also must check if any predator is feeding from the nest (ants, crabs, birds).
Clean the beaches.
Collection of garbage in the communities
Community work (environmental education in schools)
To clean the community (school, streets churches, main square, etc.)
To help local entrepreneurs (eco-tourism, trap cameras, monitoring of animals, etc.)
Construction/maintaining work at the house or the hatchery
Agricultural work and reforestation
To help in translation work of the web site (if the language is not available)

Logement & nourriture

You will be hosted in the projects in its rooms. There is no Wifi!!!

El Progreso is a small village mainly with family houses very close to the beautiful beaches of Bahia Drake. During your leisure time you will have the chance to discover the surrounding of this wonderful place !
