Volunteers will be working with Carmarthenshire County Council. One of the council's obligations is to encourage access to the countryside and to maintain areas of the countryside, footpaths and country parks. Volunteers will carry out practical environmental tasks alongside professional contractors. the work will be varied and may include: making improvements to public access in the park (i.e. improving and developing footpaths), creating picnic areas and information points, asssisting with building bridges, making boardwalks, constructing stiles, general clearance work or clearing scrub for reforestation. The work will be physical, outdoors and may be in unpleasant conditions such as wind, rain or mud (even in summer!). There will be full days of work (9 - 17.00) so volunteers may become tired and sore and should come prepared for hard work! The group will be lead by the group of MTVs (medium term volunteers) who will be staying at the centre for four months. Volunteers may also participate in some global activities with children and young people in schools and youth centres around carmarthenshire. Volunteers should expect to take part in these activities once or twice during their stay. These activities will be informal sessions and will concentrate on volunteers giving these young people some information about where they come from and running activities with them. Volunteers might like to think about activities or games from their own countries that they could contribute to these sessions - for example a national dance, simple congs, childrens games, arts and crafts activities etc. the group of MTVs will help to lead these activities.
The group will live in the Glanaman youth resource centre, staying in dormitory accommodation. The group will cook for themselves in the kitchen in the centre. the centre also has two bathrooms, a washing machine and limited internet access. Glanamanitself is a small town but there is a post office, a couple of shops and a pub.
Location: The group will be living in the small town of Glanaman in carmarthenshire. They will be living and working in a beautiful part of Wales where there are many hills, beaches and castles. there will also be plenty of opportunities to hear Welsh being spoken as many local people have it as their first language.
Volunteers will meet at the Llanelli bus/train station Special requirements: Volunteers should bring steel toe capped boots for working, a waterproof jacket and trousers, as well as plenty of warm clothing and sun protection, since they will be working outside in all weather conditions.
